The Perfect Fit for Your Groomsmen

There are many choices to make when planning a wedding, from the decorations to the wedding cake, but one that should never be undermined is the groomsmen’s suits. The entire bridal party spends so much time in front of the camera, so, ensuring their outfits are cohesive is paramount. Melbourne Wedding & Bride’s Chloe Jaenicke discusses what should be considered when choosing outfits for the groomsmen with Gentry Menswear director and head stylist, Hazem Halabi.

Gentry Menswear operates under one simple philosophy: that a man deserves to feel confident in what he wears, especially on one of the biggest days of his life. Specialising in wedding suits, made-to-measure tailoring and styling for grooms and their groomsmen, the company understands the ins and outs of how to style for an event as important as the wedding.

“Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of dressing hundreds of wedding parties and helping couples navigate the often-overlooked details that make a wedding day feel seamless,” Halabi says.

“We guide our clients through the entire process — from selecting colours and fabrics to coordinating the bridal party and ensuring every garment fits perfectly.”

Halabi stresses that choosing the right suits for the groomsmen is of utmost importance, as the right suits can create a sense of cohesion and lead to spectacular photos of your special day.

“The wedding party spends almost as much time in front of the camera as the couple themselves, so the groomsmen’s suits play a significant role in the overall aesthetic of the day,” he says. “The goal isn’t necessarily to have everyone wearing the most expensive suit, but to ensure the entire group looks like they belong together.”

This begs the questions of what elements need to be considered when choosing your groomsmens’ suits?

A Perfectly Fitted Suit

Halabi believes the most important thing to consider when choosing suits for the groomsmen is the tailoring. While he says its often overlooked, Halabi stresses no matter how expensive or extravagant a suit is, it cannot look good unless it is tailored correctly.

“A perfectly fitted suit will always look better than an expensive suit that doesn’t fit correctly. The right fit enhances posture, improves confidence, and ensures each member of the wedding party feels comfortable throughout the day,” he says. “It’s often the difference between someone wearing a suit and someone wearing it well.”

One of the key reasons fittings can be overlooked is couples not leaving enough time to choose suits. Halabi suggests starting the process of choosing the suits three to six months before the wedding, as leaving it to the last minute can create unnecessary stress for everyone involved.

“This provides enough time to organise fittings, accommodate any changes in sizing, and make adjustments if required. It also removes a significant amount of stress as the wedding date approaches,” Halabi says. “Even an affordable suit can look exceptional when it fits properly.”

To further reduce the overwhelming feeling of choosing the perfect suit, Halabi suggests gathering your groomsmen and making a special day of it, as he believes choosing the suits should be one of the more memorable parts of the wedding journey.

Suiting The Bridal Party

From complementing the bridesmaids, groom, venue and even each other, cohesion is another massive component of choosing the perfect suits for your groomsmen. According to Halabi, the most common approach is choosing matching suits for your groomsmen.

“Having all groomsmen in matching suits creates a clean, uniform appearance and photographs exceptionally well,” he says.

However, Halabi says there has been a growing shift towards adding more individuality to the suits. He makes it clear that if a bridal party chooses this option, that consistency is clear.

“If the suits vary slightly, there should still be common elements that tie the group together— whether that’s colour, fabric, accessories, or footwear,” he says. “A cohesive wedding party doesn’t necessarily mean identical outfits; it simply means that every styling decision feels intentional.”

Regardless of whether the suits match or not, it’s important that the groom stands out, after all, it is his special day. This means making subtle and deliberate choices that differentiate the groom from his groomsmen.

“This can be achieved subtly through a different jacket, a change in fabric, contrasting accessories, or a variation in colour,” Halabi says. “The key is ensuring there is enough distinction to draw attention to the groom while maintaining a cohesive look across the bridal party.”

Another role of the groomsmen is to look good beside the bridesmaids. As they stand side-byside all day, having matching elements between the groomsmen and bridesmaids is the easiest way to create cohesion with the objective of complementing rather than replicating.

“Typically, we see couples incorporate the bridesmaids’ colours through ties, pocket squares, boutonnieres, or subtle accessory choices,” Halabi says. “It doesn’t need to be an exact match—in fact, I would usually advise against that.”

Taking into account the setting of the wedding is also important. For example, for a more formal city wedding Halabi would suggest black tuxedos, while a light neutral suit may better complement a winery or beach setting.

However, while many new trends continue to emerge, Halabi suggests that timeless styling will always outlast trends.

“At the end of the day, great wedding style isn’t about trends—it’s about confidence, fit, and creating memories that will look just as good in twenty years as they do today,” Halabi says.
